Intelligent Wheel Flange Lubrication (iWFL)

Intelligent Wheel Flange Lubrication (I-WFL) is an automated, condition-responsive system designed to reduce wheel–rail friction, wear, and noise while maintaining safe and predictable tram operation.

The system applies controlled amounts of lubricant to the wheel flange based on operating conditions such as speed, curvature, direction of travel, and vehicle usage. By delivering lubrication only when and where it is required, I-WFL optimises wheel–rail interface performance without compromising braking or traction.

Onboard Intelligence

Embedded logic with monitoring and fault reporting

Metered Delivery

Precise control to prevent over-lubrication

Operational Challenges

High wheel–rail forces in tram operations lead to:
• Accelerated wheel and rail wear in tight curves
• Increased noise, vibration, and passenger discomfort
• Frequent maintenance intervention and asset replacement
• Risk of inconsistent friction from uncontrolled lubrication
These issues drive higher operating costs and reduced asset life.

Operational Benefits

Intelligent, condition-based lubrication provides:
• Reduced wheel and rail wear
• Lower noise and vibration levels
• Extended asset life and reduced maintenance costs
• Consistent braking and traction performance
