Top of Rail Friction Modifier (ToRFM)
Top of Rail Friction Modifier (TOR FM) is a controlled friction management system designed to optimise the wheel–rail interface by maintaining a consistent and predictable coefficient of friction at the top of the rail.
The system applies a precisely metered friction-modifying material to the rail head in targeted locations, such as tight curves, braking zones, and approaches to stops. By stabilising friction levels, TOR FM improves traction and braking consistency while reducing wheel slip, slide, noise, and rail corrugation.

Features

Braking Compatibility
Maintains predictable traction and stopping performance

Noise and Wear Reduction
Minimises wheel squeal and rail corrugation

Targeted Rail Head Application
Focused delivery in curves and braking zones
Operational Challenges
Uncontrolled friction at the rail head can result in:
• Wheel slip and slide during acceleration and braking
• Inconsistent stopping performance
• Wheel squeal, rail corrugation, and vibration
• Increased wear to wheels and track
These effects impact safety, ride quality, and asset longevity.
Operational Benefits
Controlled friction management enables:
• Predictable and consistent braking performance
• Reduced noise and vibration
• Lower wheel and rail wear
• Improved passenger comfort and ride quality
